Where Is Nairobi National Park?

Nairobi National Park is located just 7 kilometers (about 4 miles) from the center of Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya.
That’s what makes it so amazing, this is the only national park in the world that sits inside a major city.

Nairobi National Park was created in 1946, which made it Kenya's first national park.
That's correct — it was the first one in the entire country! In the past, wild animals could move freely in and around Nairobi. As the city started growing, the park was built to help protect the animals and give people a chance to see wild Africa without having to travel far.

One of the key people behind this park was Mervyn Cowie, a conservationist who really cared about keeping Kenya's wildlife safe.
Because of his work, Nairobi National Park became a safe place for animals and a popular destination for people who love nature all over the world.

What Can You See Here

No Elephants?

That’s right—elephants don’t live in this park.
The park is too close to the city and too small for them to roam. But you can still see them in other parts of Kenya, like Amboseli or Tsavo.

Birds, Birds, and More Birds

If you love watching birds, bring your binoculars.
Nairobi National Park is a paradise for birdwatchers. You can spot ostriches, secretary birds, hornbills, vultures, eagles, and hundreds more. Some are local, while others come from Europe and Asia during certain seasons.

Things to Do in the Park

Get into a safari vehicle, either with a guide or self-drive, and explore the park. Mornings and evenings are the best times to see animals. The roads are pretty well-maintained, and the experience is exciting.

This historic place is where Kenyan leaders burned elephant ivory to show the world their fight against poaching.

This raised boardwalk gives you a chance to see animals like lions, leopards, and rare birds up close in a more controlled setting.

It’s perfect for families and school groups.

There are several picnic spots in the park where you can relax, have lunch, and enjoy the view.

Some have safe walking trails for a closer look at the landscape.

When’s the Best Time to Visit

The park is open all year round, but some months are better than others depending on what you want to see.

June to October (Dry Season): Best for wildlife viewing.
The grass is short, and animals are easier to spot.

November to May (Green Season): Great for birdwatchers.
Migratory birds arrive, and the landscape is lush and beautiful.

Early mornings or late afternoons are best for game drives—animals are more active, and the light is perfect for photos.
